The Centennial Reenactment of the Town Site Relocation
Looking back at how our people journeyed in time heightens our cultural sensibility, identity, and pride. This allows us to acknowledge our frailty, and surmounting them withcollective strength, mustering courage amidst adversity, with deep devotion to the Most Holy Trinity.
Indeed, November 8 stands out in history – when the people from the settlement in Binongtoan (GuinBungtohan) transferred to the present site because of the big flood which leveled the town in 1883.
As documented in the Alangalang Centennial Yearbook (1883-1983) and the Souvenir Program (1979), former Mayor Francisco Gariando related what his mother Josefa Capatoy had told him. The image of the Most Holy Trinity was installed in a carriage, and the townspeople with the Jefe, Rev. Fr. Francisco Crespo, municipal officials, landowners, businessmen, traders, and agricultural workers, marched in procession. The trail and temporary bridges were made through the bayanihan spirit. Accompanied by a brass band, they walked a distance of two and a half kilometers to the church.
A century after, the town organized a grand celebration, the 100th year of the transfer of Alangalang to its present site on that auspicious date November 8, 1983, a day to remember.
With the theme An Pag-tapon, the Reenactment consisted of Part I – Re-Enactment of the transfer of the town of Alangalang from Barangay Binongtoan. There was a Diana at 3:00 a.m. to awaken the townsfolk, and by 4:00 a.m. the Aurora procession started
The people wore colorful costumes of ancient times, carrying household goods, pots, and pans, a few belongings. Some rode on their farm animals, and others bore their houses on their shoulders showing bayanihan style. The people chanted the prayers of the rosary accompanied by a brass band. An awesome sight of the multitudes gathered to attend the Thanksgiving Mass officiated by Rev. Msgr. FelominoBactol, Rev. Fr. Antonio Adre, and Rev. Fr. Alejandro Alve. Despite the festive atmosphere, a hallowed silence was felt.
Part Two – Laying of the Cornerstone of the Alangalang Foundation Marker located on Santissima Trinidad street graced by Assemblyman Damian Aldaba, Mayor Andres C. Yu, Sr. Vice-Mayor Agustin Peralta, the Sangguniang Bayan Members, Miss Progress of Alangalang 1983, municipal officials, and the townspeople. A program followed at the public plaza, highlighted by the Awarding Ceremonies presided over by Mr. Federico de Veyra and Mr. Francisco Gariando.
A hundred centennial awardees were recognized for their contribution to the progress and development of Alangalang for the past 100 years. The day was capped with a welcome party at the Alangalang Cultural Center for the participants of the 1983 Provincial Athletic Meet.
Years on, similar commemoration activities were held as the townspeople look forward to the next centennial celebration.
Long Live Alangalang!
